FOR THE N. E. R. HERALD.
A Thought at Evening.

I sit within this leafy bower
Encirled by the climbing vine,
And feel, at midnight's stilly hour,
Its tendrils 'round my temples twine.

The zephyr from the sweet southwest
Is whispering 'mid the tender leaves,
And lulling to a quiet rest
The weary soul that all day grieves.

The music of the falling brook
Is borne along the midnight air,
And stars in twinkling beauty look
Down on the slumbering sons of care.

And the moon's pale light is lending
A dream-like glory to the sod,
And the dew on flowers descending
In stillness, like the will of God.

But yet amid this paradise
Of all the beauties earth can give,
The spirit longs for brighter skies,
Where love and faith unsullied live.
