We have, at the present writing, no further news of the proceedings of the convention of the democracy of the first district than the announcement in the Holly Springs Democrat, that on the 6th ballot Q. L. C. Lamar, esq., of Lafayette, received the nomination.
Mr. Lamar was not an aspirant to the post; and his selection was the result of a determination to harmonize upon one who was not before the convention.
Mr. Lamar is a young gentleman of extraordinary talent; and his mind is amply stored with valuable learning. As an orator, he ranks among the foremost in the State. As a democrat, he belongs to the school of strict constructionists. His views upon the great question--which, like the rod of the Jewish high priest, swallows all the rest--are orthodox. On the occasion of his recent nomination for the State legislature by the democracy of Lafayette he introduced and supported a series of resolutions upon the Kansas imbroglio, which show where he will stand when the subject is brought before Congress.
We had expected much from this gentleman as a member of our State legislature; and on his entrance upon a more enlarged field of action, and a wider sphere of usefulness, we predict for him complete success. He will rise to the level of whatever emergency may present itself, and the State will be proud of him as one of her representatives in the national councils, at a crisis which demands strong minds and brave hearts.
