Indian Leader Intimates He May Visit This Country Soon
LONDON.- (CNS) - Mahatma Gandhi, he who rules the destiny of hundreds of millions of his fellow Indians by soft words of pleading, may soon be heard preaching his doctrine of "non-violent non-cooperation" to nearly a quarter of a million colored people of Harlem, if the plans of his American friends for his visit to the United States materialize.
Gandhi has intimated to D. John Haynes Holmes, pastor of the Community Church in New York City, that he will visit America if he is assured that his loin cloth and native costume will not make him subject to ridicule.
Numerous Negro organizations, it is reported, have sent invitations to the Hindu leader to visit and speak to them.
The "Mahatma" has long been recognized, not only as the most effective native leader India has ever had, but as well, as a spiritual leader of the hundreds of millions of members of the darker race all over the world. While he has centered his efforts recently on the freedom of India, he has at all times evinced a deep interest in the darker peoples. Recently he sent a message to the Negro in America, published in the Crisis Magazine. Early in his life, he spent a great deal of his time agitating for freedom among the native population of South Africa.
Should Gandhi come to America, it is planned that he will speak in New York, Washington, Philadelphia, Boston and other large cities.
