THE MEMORIAL.
Could the excellent Memorial of the American Envoys be as generally read by the citizens of France, as the French appeals were by the people of this country, it would be a difficult matter to persuade deluded Frenchmen to draw the sword against their allies. But this expectation is vain—the tyrants who at present rule that enslaved nation, not only watch over the press, but keep a jealous eye on the mails and public couriers. Indeed we have but little to hope for, but from the spirit and resources of our own country: Reconciliation seems to be quite impossible. The lawless instruments of rapine and plunder, not content with pillaging our vessels within our capes, have in some instances, landed on our islands, and carried off the farmer's stock. May the fire of resentment glow in every breast, and may each citizen arm himself for the protection of his country.
