Full Text

On Thursday, 18th, John Johnson, convicted at the New York Quarter Sessions, of the murder of James Murray, received sentence of death. When the Clerk inquired if he had any thing to say, he replied, "I am not the man that committed the murder, that's all." While the Judge was pronouncing the sentence, not a muscle of the prisoner's face moved, except when he occasionally muttered something; and, at its close, he looked round on the audience with a hardened unconcern. As the constable, taking him from the bar, offered to support him, he said, with the utmost indifference.-- "Praised be God, I am strong enough yet." He is sentenced to be hanged on the first of April, and his body to be delivered over to the surgeons for dissection.
