WORST FROST IN
9-YEAR PERIOD
Millions
of
Oranges
Are
Frozen on the Trees in
Southern Part of the
State, Growers Report.
Los Angeles,
Cal., Jan.
20.—
Millions of
oranges were frozen
on the trees of Southern Califor-
nia last night and severe, though
yet undetermined damage
was
suffered by citrus fruit growers
in many districts by the worst
frost that has struck this region
in nine years, according to of-
ficials of the growers' organiza-
tions.
Continued
cold
weather
was
anticipated tonight, and arrange-
ments were made for smudging
large areas of orchard.
Exactly what damage the frost
will do depends largely upon the
sort of weather that succeeds it,
growers said.
If the weather
warms up gradually, so that the
frozen fruit can thaw out slowly,
the crop loss will be less severe
than otherwise, they declared.
The crop of avocados was dam-
aged seriously and a sharp reduc-
tion of the lemon production may
be expected as a result of the
freezing of young fruit, according
to local horticultural officials.
Southern California today had
a variety of novelties—automobile
radiators burst by freezing, frozen
water pipes, ice on ponds and
ditches and a shortage of gas,
due to the unusual demands made
on the mains for heating pur-
poses.
