Extract of a Letter from Portsmouth, Aug. 8.

Yesterday arrived Sir Edward Hawke, Commander in Chief on the present Expedition, and hoisted his Flag on board the Ramillies, at Spithead, and was saluted by all the Squadron accordingly.

The three Admirals are just gone on board to muster the Companies personally, and to give the necessary Orders for getting all the Men of War ready with the utmost Expedition, Some of Strength must be the Object of Destination.

The Number of Ships to be employed on this Expedition are continually altering; at present it has a very formidable Appearance: The Ships now ordered to compleat their Provisions, the Royal George, Royal Anne, and Royal Sovereign, of 100 Guns; the Neptune, Ramillies, Barfleur, and Namur, of 90 Guns; Royal William, Princess Amelia, and Magnanime, of 80; Forfar, Dublin, Alcide, Torbay, & Intrepide, of 70 Guns: the Medway, America, Achilles, and Dunkirk, of 60.
