A 14-year-old boy was shot to death in the Brewster housing project area Sunday morning by a policeman.
The body was identified as Anthony Sherrard, 2136 Helen. Sunday evening by an aunt and an uncle who told police the boy had lived with several different relatives.
According to police the boy was fleeing from a stolen car across the Brewster playfield, at Hastings and Wilkins, when he was shot by Patrolman John Gerber of Woodward Station.
Gerber and three other officers said they began chasing the car on Wilkins near Beaubien when its driver tried to ram a police cruiser.
The car stopped across from the playfield and Sherrard, who was driving, and another boy jumped out and ran. The other boy escaped.
Patrolman John Gerber said he shouted "Halt!" several times and fired once when the driver failed to stop. The bullet from his .38 caliber revolver went through the boy's chest from right to left.
Officers said the Sherrard boy was 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighed 145 pounds and appeared to be older than 14.
