TOO CHEAP TO BE APPRECIATED
Sometimes we feel like breaking away from our long established rule, and accepting advertising from outside merchants, since if the outsiders cannot advertise here in one way, they do in another. Recently this locality was flooded with advertising dodgers from an adjoining place. They were sent through the mail, and on each was a cent and a half postage. Figuring on the basis of 3,000 circulars, which is practically the subscription list of this paper, the cost of the postage stamps alone would be $45. Then would be the still larger expense of printing, folding and getting the dodgers addressed and ready for mailing-but laying all the other big expense aside, the postage alone would be practically double the cost of a full page advertisement in the Democrat, and that too without any further expense, delivered to the homes. Think of reaching 3,000 subscribers, or at least 15,000 readers, for such a price--it is too cheap to be fully appreciated. We doubt if there is a like place in the state where similar conditions exist, or where newspaper advertising is so cheap in price, as here through the local newspapers. A short classified advertisement in the Democrat costs per issue but 25c. Consider it-reaching 15,000 people for 25c.
Our local merchants may be handicapped in some ways, but one thing is very certain, and that is they are not in the matter of their advertising medium, as they have access to the columns of the Democrat, one of the best papers in the state-one that "covers the vicinity like the sunshine" and that too at a cost, which if figured on the general rule of newspaper advertising, is at about one-third the price that the average newspaper of similar circulation charges.
