CHOCTAW INDIANS OPPOSE SALE OF SURFACE LANDS

McAlester, Okla., June 25. - D. C. McCurtain, son of Governor Green McCurtain of the Choctaw nation, today sent a message to Senator La Follette in which he said:

"The Indians are not opposed to the immediate disposition of all the tribal property, but are strongly opposed to the sale of the surface of the coal lands or other portions, the disposal of which would prove an injury to the balance."

McCurtain holds that the individual Indian cannot enter into a contract bearing upon the undivided tribal property of the Indian nation and he therefore contends that J. F. McMurray's contracts are not valid.

"The McMurray contracts do not represent the collective sentiment of the Indians," he said.

McCurtain and his law partner have a contract with the Choctaw Indians to conduct probate matters for the Indians.
