From Claypoole's American Daily Advertizer.

GERMANTOWN, 21 Aug. 1798.

Messrs Claypoole,

Having lately read in several Philadelphia papers an extract of a letter from Mr. William Wood, dated Gibraltar, June 3, 1798, to his brother at New-York, abusing the character of Joseph Yznardi, Esq. acting consul for the United States of America at Cadiz and the district attached thereto—and having lived some months under the hospitable roof of Mr. Yznardi, which afforded me daily opportunities of witnessing his continual charity to, and unwearied consular exertions in behalf of Americans, suffering by illegal captures and otherwise, and being fully persuaded that Mr. Yznardi, who is highly esteemed by the Spanish merchants as a man of probity and honour, is a just and upright character, and always ready to assist the citizens of the country he has the honour to represent, by advice and other means, I am led to believe, with all deference to the character of Mr. Wood, that his letter has been written under wrong impressions; and here Mr. Wood will give me leave to observe, this is not at all extraordinary, when we recollect the many envious and designing characters, that are perpetually hanging about strangers in that country, for the very purpose of deceiving them, which they do not find a difficult task, particularly when the stranger does not understand the Spanish language, which is the case with Mr. Wood.

As newspaper publications are oftentimes too readily believed, I have thought proper to oppose that tendency in Mr. Wood's, in behalf of my friend, to whom I shall send the extract from Mr. Wood's letter, and doubt not but he will, as soon as possible, enable me, or some other person to lay before the public a full statement of the transactions that have led to these publications; until which time I trust a generous public will suspend their opinion. Principles of justice and friendship being my only motive for stepping forward in defence of the character of Mr. Yznardi; who is not present to speak for himself, will, I trust, render an apology to the public for thus intruding upon them unnecessarily.

CHANDLER TAICE.

The Printers who have published Mr. Wood's letter, are requested to give this a place in their papers.

Main Argument

joseph yznardi, us consul at cadiz, is a man of probity and honor who aids americans; william wood's abusive letter stems from wrong impressions and deception by envious characters, as wood does not speak spanish.
