Awful Catastrophe.—The New Bedford Standard reports that as Mr. John C. Brown was passing down South Water street yesterday forenoon, he noticed the reflection of fire upon a shop window, near Griffin street, and looking inside the shop he saw a woman completely enveloped in flames. He tried the door which was fastened; breaking it in and taking the woman to the street, he finally succeeded in extinguishing the flames, but not until the woman was burned in a most horrible manner. She is the wife of Joseph King, a Portuguese, and as has been the practice while he chanced to be away, she was accustomed to the immoderate use of intoxicating liquors. The stove was overturned, probably in a freak of drunkenness, and by this means fire was communicated to her clothing. The woman has two children—a boy of thirteen and a girl of eight years of age.
