GEORGIA PURCHASE.

We mentioned in our last, that a bill was before the Legislature for repealing the contracts entered into by the preceding Legislature, for part of the Western Territory. This repeal bill having passed both Houses on Saturday last, received the Executive signature, and has thereby become a law of the land (if it is not improper to call that a law which cannot possibly have any operation.)

The following is the title of the Bill.

"GEORGIA.

"A bill declaring null and void a certain usurped act passed by the last legislature of this State, at Augusta, the 7th day of January, one thousand seven hundred and ninety-five, under the pretended title of an act supplementary to an act entitled, an act for appropriating a part of the unlocated territory of this State, for the payment of the late State troops, and for other purposes therein mentioned; declaring the right of this State to the unappropriated territory thereof, for the protection of the frontiers, and for other purposes; and for expunging from the public records the said usurped act, and declaring the right of this State to all lands lying within the boundaries therein mentioned."

By this repealing act the contract with the companies, although carried into full effect, is declared null and void, and the law authorizing and making the contract, is within three days after passing the act ordered to be publicly burnt, and the records respecting the said contract to be expunged; agreeably to which regulation we are informed, that the two Houses on Monday last moved in procession to the funeral pile, prepared in front of the State House preceded by their Committee, bearing in their arms the records of the usurped act; when arrived at the fatal spot, of the President of the Senate, the President handed them to the Speaker of the House, the Speaker to the Clerk, and he to the door keeper, who with coolness and firmness of mind, laid the devoted victims on the burning pile, where they were soon consumed to ashes.
