[From a Correspondent.]

NEWPORT, January 5.

On Tuesday last, at about 1 P. M. a house in this town, situated in Church Street, part of the estate of the late Mr. John Frazer, was discovered to be on fire. Its vicinity to compact wooden buildings, with a strong westerly wind, caused great and reasonable apprehension of an extensive conflagration. The spirited and unremitted exertions of the inhabitants, however, prevented this calamity, and no injury was done by the fire, excepting to the building in which it originated, which is nearly destroyed.
