ICC Jurisdiction Over
Alaska-U.S. Transportation
WASHINGTON, (P) Sen. Magnuson (D-Wash.) asked Congress Friday to give the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) jurisdiction over transportation between the United States and Alaska.
The bill, which he introduced as chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee at ICC's request, would give the Commission authority now held by the Maritime Board over water transportation between the States and the Territory.
It also would set up a 3-member nonpartisan board of Alaskans with initial jurisdiction over transportation within Alaska. The board, with control similar to that exercised by States, would operate as a branch of the ICC until Alaska receives Statehood. Its membership would require confirmation by the Alaska Senate.
The proposed bill, Magnuson said, is the outgrowth of hearings held on the West Coast and in Alaska in 1955. Testimony was given then that sharp competition between motor carriers and the Alaska Railroad was resulting in "ruinous rate cutting," the Senator said.
