THE PAPAL CONTROVERSY.

It appears to be felt in Europe that the old discussion with Popery needs to be gone over again. The Church of England is clearly unprepared for the assault made upon it by the Romanists, as is shown by the numerous conversions. It is said that Mr. Newman, the late Puseyite leader, having become a Romish priest, is about to be sent back to England, to introduce a new order of priests—the Oratorians—into that country. The order has never been established there, and the prospect of its being added to the Papist societies already in existence, is viewed with some uneasiness.
Conversions from the Anglican to the Romish church still continue. Rev. Mr. Horne late of Southampton, was, with his daughter, received into the Roman communion at Rome, by Cardinal Acton; and Mr. Kingdon, of Trinity College, Cambridge, and two other clergymen of the Established Church, have lately gone over. Among the Converts is one Quaker, Mr. Jabez Gibson.
To meet this state of things both in England and on the continent, a prospectus, issued from a most respectable source, has been transmitted to a number of the leading friends of Protestantism in Scotland, England, America, Germany, Switzerland, and France, all of whom have expressed their approbation of the plan, which proposes a re-publication of some of the ablest works of the Reformers, and some efficient means for putting them into circulation. It is proposed to form a Protestant Library, consisting of twelve or fifteen volumes, to be issued quarterly. Among those who have recommended the scheme are Dr. D'Aubigne, M. Gaussen, of Geneva; Dr. Hengstenberg, of Berlin; Dr. Baird, of New York; and Rev. Mr. Bickersteth.

Event Details

The Church of England faces assaults from Romanists leading to numerous conversions. Mr. Newman, former Puseyite leader, now a Romish priest, is to introduce Oratorians to England. Recent converts include Rev. Mr. Horne and daughter received by Cardinal Acton at Rome, Mr. Kingdon and two other clergymen, and Quaker Mr. Jabez Gibson. To counter this, a prospectus for republishing Reformers' works and forming a Protestant Library of 12-15 quarterly volumes has been approved by Protestant leaders in Scotland, England, America, Germany, Switzerland, and France.
