Avon, May 12th, 1873.
Editors Register:—Ice froze to the thickness of a quarter of an inch on our sidewalks on Friday night last, which was caused by a shower of rain the evening before. The fruit was unhurt.
Messrs. Henry Voorhees, N. Nance and R. W. Townsend, have been making additions to their houses. Mr. D. M. Stump has also been making several changes with the inside of his as well as putting on a porch on the back side of the L.
Elder Magee, of Prairie City, preached on the subject of 'Temperance,' a few evenings ago in this place. He gave some startling facts in reference to the difference of human life, between those who are but moderate drinkers, and those who do not drink at all. It should be a warning to every man on knowing the fact that one-half and even more of his life may be or is shortened by intemperance. He stated as a fact, that one man who has license in Prairie City, to sell liquors compels every other man to close down in that line. The sale of liquor thus can be stopped.
Rev. Josiah Davis is visiting friends in Indiana. Mr. J. D. Mautaniee and family passed through this place on Thursday last, en route to California.
Mr. Joseph Ratliffe, of Rushville, died in this place last Thursday night, quite suddenly. Mr. Ratliffe was formerly a citizen of Canton. He leaves a wife and two daughters, who deeply mourn his loss. The family came to this country from England some eight years ago.
Mrs. John McBroom has been visiting friends in Iowa the last two weeks. Mr. R. A. Lovitt, formerly of Abingdon, now of Bradford, Iowa, spent the Sabbath in this place. He has no doubt a favorite here. Miss Eveline Griffith left town this morning for Farmington, to engage in the millinery business with Mrs. Foster of that place.
A call has been published for a meeting of the stockholders of the Avon cemetery, on Saturday, the 31st.
Mr. Guthridge, our assessor, intends that property in Avon shall stand as fair in price as in times past, though property can be bought much below old figures.
The quiet of Abingdon was disturbed on Saturday evening last by a shooting affair. A colored man was the victim of the affray, and is thought to be dangerously wounded, as the ball passed through the abdomen.
