To Messrs. Purdie & Dixon.

SIRS,

By inserting the following lines in your next Gazette you will oblige, Gentlemen, your constant reader, and frequent admirer.

AS every true man must a Lady admire,
Be he poet, philosopher, clown, cit, or squire,
To such I present an acrostical rebus,
Containing the name of a favourite of Phebus,
I should say Apollo, but never mind that,
For Phebus, allow me Sirs, comes in more pat,
But now to the mystery, and construe it right,
Twill name my soul's wish! and my heart's chief delight
To an excellent fruit, with a very smooth rind,
Add another fine fruit of almost the same kind,
With another, which many conceive has no equal,
And what should be done with them. Now to the sequel.
What biases lawyers, divines, and most lovers,
What the man that is fond of excelling discovers,
What all men must suffer, as sure as the light,
What all men should do, would they do what is right.
What's the season in which pretty maids Should be kiss'd,
Which they're apt to regret if it chance to be miss'd.
