SALEM, June 16.
SHIP NEWS.
The snow Enterprize, which sailed from Boston on the 5th of February last, loaded with a very valuable cargo of sugar, coffee and cotton, bound for Hamburg, and commanded by Nathaniel Brookhouse of this town, foundered in fifteen days after she sailed, on the 20th February, lat. 40, long. 41. In a heavy gale she was struck by a sea, and damaged so much, that the crew were in momentary expectation of her going down. They however continued on board till the next day; and after providing as many necessaries as their situation would permit, they took to their boats. Mr. Freeman, of Boston, supercargo and half-owner, Captain Brookhouse, Mr. Tink, mate, Mr. Brookhouse, second-mate, and four mariners, in the long-boat, and Nathaniel Card and three more in the yawl. In sixteen minutes after they left the snow, she went down. The long boat sailed faster than the yawl, and they unhappily lost sight of each other in the afternoon—for the next morning the small boat, with the four mariners, was picked up by the ship Ruby, of Charleston, (S. C.) bound for France, where they were carried. The long-boat has not yet been heard of, but it is hoped she may have reached the Western Islands.
The snow was owned by Messrs. Freeman and Vans, of Boston.
