The corpse arrived at Salisbury in a hearse and six, decorated with plumes and escutcheons, followed by three mourning coaches and six, attended by out-riders and servants. It was laid in state at the Antelope inn in a room hung with black cloth. The next morning, between eight and nine o'clock, it was moved to Fonthill for private interment. 45 tenants from Fonthill and the neighbourhood met the corpse to attend it to the grave in respect to his memory.
