Work to Begin at Once By Street and Sewer Department.
OYSTER SHELLS WILL BE USED
SPECIAL MEETING OF THE DIRECTORS HELD THIS MORNING AND ACTION TAKEN IN THE MATTER NEW YORK DREDGING COMPANY PRIVILEGED TO BUILD DIKES UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS.
At a special meeting of the Street and Sewer Department this morning it was decided upon motion of Mr. Simmons to do what was possible at present to repair the roadbed on the causeway.
This matter of the causeway has given the directors much concern lately, and they have been subjected to a great amount of unjust criticism regarding it. At this morning's meeting it was decided to order a vessel load of oyster shells, which will be placed on the road, beginning at the south end of Market street bridge, and the work extended as far as the shells will reach. All the worst places in the road will be filled in and repaired. It is not policy to entirely cover the roadway entirely at this time of the year with shells owing to the frosts and cold weather incidental to Winter weather, which would render driving dangerous and prevent the shells from being thoroughly ground down.
The oyster shells have been ordered from Delaware City parties, and will arrive here about Thursday and will at once be hauled from the wharf and placed on the road.
The directors visited Christiana river in the vicinity of Lobdell's Car Wheel Works, with a view to granting the New York Dredging Company permission to erect dikes along Christiana avenue to hold the mud pumped from the bed of the river during the dredging of the harbor. After going over the ground the department decided to give the company the desired permission provided it complies with the following conditions:
That the foot of the dikes shall be at least twenty-two feet from the line of telegraph poles now erected on the south side of Christiana avenue; that said dikes shall be so constructed that they shall not in any manner interfere with public travel on Christiana avenue: neither shall travel be obstructed or interfered with by or during the process of filling property enclosed by such dike or dikes; that all work shall be done by and at the expense of the New York Dredging Company, and in the event of any damage or breaks in said dikes, that company shall immediately repair the same together with any damages to said Christiana avenue, or other property, public or private: and, provided further, that said company shall and will be at any and all times, save harmless the Mayor and Council of Wilmington or any of its officers or servants, from any loss, expense and damages that may be caused to any person or persons or property by leaking from overflow, breakage of said dikes or from any cause whatsoever by reason of or on account of the construction, filling and use of the aforesaid dikes or their subsequent removal.
This permission shall not be operative nor construed to be operative until the acceptance of these conditions have been presented in writing to the board of directors of this department, signed by the president of your company, properly attested, with its corporation seal affixed.
