Full Text

By the most recent accounts from Jamaica we find, that the conduct of the representatives of the people has caused great uneasiness, insomuch, that at the meetings of the magistrates, &c. it was resolved, on the 25th of January, that their proceedings were oppressive, inconsistent, and unconstitutional!

REASONS—oppressive, by vesting large sums of money for unnecessary purposes,

inconsistent, because they rejected the petitions of creditors, "that the Island papers might be taken in payment of Island taxes"

unconstitutional, by granting a considerable sum of public money for the relief of an individual.

At this meeting it was resolved that the Custos be required to call together the freeholders to know their sense upon this important subject, which he did; the result of whose consultations was, a petition to the Lieut. Governor, purporting their earnest desire (for reasons above-mentioned, &c.) that the assembly be immediately dissolved. To this petition his honor replied, that he should give it that serious consideration which its importance requires.
