TWO FALL FROM THIRD STORY WHEN SCAFFOLD BREAKS
Irvington Man Has Ribs Fractured, but Companion Is Only Bruised.

The breaking of a scaffold upon which they were working about 3:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon caused John Kurfess, of 1014 Springfield avenue, Irvington, and Edward Drew, of 99 Wall street, the same town, to fall from the third story of a new building at 893 South Sixteenth street, Newark. Drew was badly hurt.

The two men are members of the Irvington Building Company, which is putting up the house for Sidney W. Allen, a former resident of Irvington. The men were engaged in clapboarding the side of the building, after sheathing it with paper. A heavy roll of the paper which they were using dropped over on the scaffold, and this, together with their own weight, caused the timbers to give way. In falling Kurfess escaped striking the scaffold below and landed on his feet. Drew, who weighs about 250 pounds, in his fall struck a 2x4 timber which braced the scaffold. His weight broke this in two, and he fell to the ground, striking on his back.

Kurfess, who escaped with slight bruises, went to his companion's assistance.

A mason's wagon belonging to Gruhn & Schwartz was procured and the injured man was assisted into the wagon and taken to his home.

Dr. James R. English was sent for, and said that the man's ribs had probably been fractured and his back badly bruised. The injured man suffered such pain that the doctor was unable to last night to make a thorough examination of his injuries. This morning Kurfess was able to go to his work, but his companion will be confined to his bed for some time to come.
