Full Text

The thorough and apparently trustworthy canvass of Republican sentiment in Illinois made by the Chicago Times is likely to upset a good many calculations. Some interesting points are made clear by it. Among these are the following: At least two-thirds of the counties in the State are strongly opposed to a third term, rendering it hardly probable that any attempt can succeed to instruct the State delegation to the Chicago Convention against the expressed wish of the party. Should General Grant, however, secure the nomination, he will be quite generally supported. The German vote in the State is solid for Washburne. The Times, in summing up the result of its canvass, concludes that "the opposition of Illinois to Grant in the National Convention will prove a blow from which his cause cannot recover." The revelation of the weakness of his support will do more than anything else which has heretofore developed, or is yet to develop, to draw Grant out of the race.
