People of America—Attend to the following extract of a letter from a gentleman in Boston to his friend in this place, stating an outrage, that saving the affair of the Chesapeake, is the most violent and atrocious of any the American flag has been subjected to.
"The Ship Eliza, Captain Farley, arrived at this port on Saturday last: every piece of intelligence brought by him, as it respects foreign affairs, has been very generally published, except that in which this nation is more particularly interested; I mean the fact of the American Flag's being taken down on the fourth of July last from, the mast heads of every ship in the harbor of Liverpool, by the inhabitants of that place; some of them burnt, others torn in pieces, & then trampled under foot, besides the outrage committed on their hulls and their rigging.
"I have every reason to believe, it was never intended that these facts should meet the public eye.
If necessary, they can be attested by the most respectable men.
"We sincerely hope that our rulers will not temporise longer, but come to some decision that may place the interest and the honor of the nation above, at least, the contempt of the world."
[The preceding communication was handed us for publication, which we most readily give, in the hope that it will lead to an investigation of the subject to which it alludes. We rely on our friends in Boston to enquire into this affair, as one interesting to the feelings of every American, and that through their papers, they will communicate the information they may acquire; we should have suspected such an outrage less in Liverpool than any part of England, for in that port the Americans have acquired influence and are more respected than in any port in G. Britain].. Pub. Led.
