By an arrival, since our last, at this port, from Bordeaux, accounts are received some days later than we have before communicated.
These accounts in general, state, that advices from Italy, had been received at Paris by the Venetian Ambassador, March 26, informing, that a great and important Victory had been gained by the army under Bonaparte, in Italy, over the Austrians, under Prince Duke Charles, who narrowly escaped being taken: his loss is estimated at 10,000. The bulletin of the Directory mentions, that this News had not yet come officially to hand, but was hourly expected by the Executive. That on the Rhine the most active preparations were making for another campaign--reinforcements were daily arriving. There was scarcely any prospect of a general Peace in Europe. "All was tranquil at Paris, and the day for choosing Electors of Legislators, had passed in the greatest good order. An Ambassador has been sent to Rome, since the Peace, and the Pope was fulfilling the Treaty."
In short from a general view, of intelligence, from that magnanimous and "wonderful"-Republic, their affairs, both internal and external, appear, at this moment, in a more eligible & prosperous state, than at any period since the commencement of the war. And yet strange to tell, there are certain "wild beasts" in America, who are continually abusing them with the avowed object of irritating and provoking a War with that illustrious Commonwealth.
