This installation has gained in personnel this past week, having picked up the Medics who were assigned to the Medical Induction Center and who are now a part of Hq & Hq Detachment. We do not feel that these men are strangers to us as we have had them in our midst for some time and have worked side by side during our several years of Reception Center activity. This group includes 17 Officers headed by Major Shapiro, 50 EM and one Contract Surgeon.
AT RECEPTION STATION NO. 16
Among those who were processed through this section of our Personnel Center was S/Sgt Clinton Eller, son of our one-time Commanding Officer Lt Col Eller. S/Sgt Eller has been in service with the American 8th Air Force based in England and was a one-time Ft. Snelling Reception Center Inductee. His home is Minneapolis and we hope his furlough will be an enjoyable one.
Also coming through the Reception Station for furlough, it was our pleasure to serve Pvt Lucille Brisbane, one of the first fifteen American WACs to arrive in Paris. Pvt Brisbane hails from Riverton, Minnesota.
Corporal (Windy) Wesley Shaw was absent from the RS for three days last week. He spent his leave in the windy city, which may or may not have any bearing on his moniker. No detailed nor accurate report was forthcoming but it is presumed the good corporal enjoyed his stay—he generally does.
Hawkshaw the Detective has nothing on S/Sgt Ames when it comes to detectiving. The Sergeant has taken it upon himself to turn sleuth, blood hound or what have you; and gives with the information—Cpl Deacon Busse will bear watching during the noon hour when at the PX. End of quote.
HEADQUARTERS DETACHMENT SCRIBBLINGS
The latest changes in the man-power of our detachment can be directly attributed to the influx of men from Camp Hale, Colorado. Most of the men have been assigned to the various branches and sections of the Personnel Center. Our detachment presently consists of the following Sections: 1. Staff 2. Mess 3. Supply and 4. Billeting.
Here's one for the books!!! All the Mess Halls and the Mess Warehouse were buzzin' with the news that Old Pappy Tec 5 Gearou became a Grandpa! Casually Old Pappy received the felicitations commensurate with the occasion, but the boys of the Mess Section are still awaiting those cigars!!!
Assistant maintenance man, Pvt Rinker seemed to get a kick out of the practice parade last week—Hillbilly music can often be heard around the barracks when Pfc Tom Harrell is about. Every once in a while Tom interrupts his song with "That'll be enough of that." Tom is a Mississippi lad with a long drawl.
Quite a few of the boys of 362 have been high on the fan-list of Sgt Fred Raniele's band. They are always present on Tuesday nights at the Field House and on Thursday nights at the St. Paul USO.
Our faces beamed with pride last Thursday night when Pfc Rollie Winebrenner so graciously dedicated a song to the boys of Lower 362.
Cpl Galbincea and his side-kick, Pvt Sam Rosenstein, were out among the social debs and high-hatelites last Saturday night.
We all welcomed the abandonment of K. P. and Guard Duty.
Pvt Harry Naatz won a moral victory in gaining 2nd relief for the first time.
Alma Mater spirit was a bit dampened around the Personnel office last week. A good reason for it was the sign hung up over S/Sgt Willie Meier's desk reading: "Army 56 Notre Dame 0". Somewhat disappointing Willie, but you hail from a swell school!
The grapevine has it that a certain EM in Station No. 16 will not be able to attend another party without his wife's permission.
BACK IN HEADQUARTERS
Activities remain "active". In the officers' affairs section, however, there seemed to be a lull in the day's occupation so to speak. Capt Voortman, chief of that section, claims he is getting nervous in the service and contents himself with studying the many circulars and manuals relative to his new assignment. Lt Jones has busied herself with a flair for interior decorating and has fixed the Officers' waiting room in a truly Elsie Dinsmore manner.
Speaking of decorating we do think the personnel of this section is quite decor in itself, (male gender graciously excluded). Mrs. "Kay" Schwirtz, formerly of file section, has been assigned to this section and brightens up her corner, while Mrs. Kollander, a newly assigned, beams from the other side of the room. We are sure that Officers returning to their homes through this section will surely feel the warmth and friendliness beaming from this office.
