Full Text

"The First Heaven And The First Earth

The first earth was a flat crude job,
The sun rose on its eastern breast —
And finally set in the West with a sob
For somewhere to find a night's rest:
How it got back around in time to rise
Next day, was the puzzle of man,
He wore out his hands and read out his eyes
In trying to figure out the plan.
The first heaven was starlit swings
Where all o' God's chilluns had shoes,
And the angels put all the saints on wings
To fly around and tell all the news:
And once at Babel, God had to confuse
The languages of the hod-carrying backs
To keep 'em from building a tower for the crews
To slide inside through the cracks"
