ECONOMICAL MANAGEMENT.

The annual report of the Jamestown hospital for the insane reveals what careful and economical management can do. The cost of maintenance per head during the past year was $154.39, as against $173.60 for the preceding year.

This is a saving of $19.21 per each patient, and is an item of considerable importance when the number of insane cared for at the hospital is taken in consideration.

For this saving of money to the taxpayers the trustees of the asylum, as well as the state administration, are entitled to much credit. They have acted in accord with the Republican theory that economy in public expenditure is a virtue as well as a necessity, and the result speaks for itself.

But the Jamestown asylum does not furnish the only illustration of the effects of good management, for all the other state institutions have been conducted on the same plan of rigid economy. Expenditures have been reduced to the lowest point consistent with the welfare of the institutions themselves.

This is what the taxpayers of the state want. They demand that there shall be no extravagance in conducting the affairs of the commonwealth, and there is none under Republican administration.

To insure the maintenance of the same high standard of management during the next two years all that will be necessary is to elect Frank White and the other candidates on the Republican state ticket, and that is what is going to happen. The taxpayers of North Dakota are too wise to give the affairs of the state over to the control of the Pops and Democrats at this time.
