Miscellaneous Thoughts extracted from some of the most celebrated writers, ancient and modern.

Illustrious Persons; from the Elevations of their Rank, are necessarily subjected to public Observation and Remark.

Envy, which is natural to Mankind, induces them to watch their Superiors with an Eye of Censure.

The Interest which every Individual has in the Conduct of Men in Office, engages the whole Community to survey their Actions with a jealous Scrutiny.

The Author whose Writings tend to abridge the Authority of an imperious Dictator, a mere Leviathan in Power, by promoting Liberty of Thought and uncontracted Enquiry, will unavoidably be the Object of factious Malediction, as well as of Praise and Commendation.

There are some pitiful Animals, who being themselves inured to Cringing and Aboasement, imagine the human Race created for Beasts of Burden; and a few divinely commissioned to mount, to spur, to whip and gallop them.

The original Equality and Independence of the human Species is treated by some as a mere Chimera in Politicks.

If one was to endeavour to draw the lovely Features of Liberty, and the hideous Deformity of Vassalage, from dirty Slaves or other would immediately appear a stupid Advocate for despotic Rule.

Injurious and indirect Practices to suppress the Truth, and prevent Animadversion, are a melancholy Omen of the Declension of public Spirit, and a most flagitious Encroachment on the Rights of the People.

An Evolution of the little Arts practised by political Trimmers, to gain Popularity, would greatly surprise Men of honest Minds unacquainted with public Affairs.

Publick Proposals are not always examined by the Reason of the Thing but by the Persons who make them.

In democratical Governments things are often determined more by Number than Weight.

A Man of a generous, independent Spirit, is often trampled upon, and ill treated; while a Flatterer, a Sycophant, is caressed and loaded with Favours.

When private Views of Ambition, and a Lust for Power, shut the Eyes of Men's Understanding to every Object that has not Charms to captivate those prevailing Passions, the Soul is lost to every generous and diffusive Sentiment.

A Man may in general account himself happy in Proportion as he has given those Reasons to hate him who hate their Country.

The Clamours of a People are often by crafty Seducers kept from a Governor's Knowledge! and while Men of Candor and Sincerity, by being misrepresented, decried, and traduced, are kept at a Distance from him, he is sometimes murmured at for Measures, which he believes to be popular.

No wise Ruler, in a mixt Government, would chuse to be unacquainted with the Inclinations of his Inferiors or the Principles and Motives, that actuate contending Parties.

Tho' the People have Right to inspect into, or animadvert upon, the Actions of their Superiors, is a Doctrine. Such only for a Tyrant to enjoin, and Slaves to obey.

The Coward, the Flatterer, the Wretch whose sordid Soul pays obeisance to the splendid Insolence of Power and Fortune, can never feel the generous Warmth of honest Patriotism.

Such is the transcendent Dignity that beams from Patriotism and publick Spirit, that the Trophies thence acquired, will triumph over all the Monuments erected to exterior and adventitious Grandeur.

The Insolence of many Men is founded on the Stupidity, or their Admirers.

The Duration of some Men's Importance, like it's Commencement, demands implicit Faith and ready Acquiescence.

If some Men could hold their Places for Life, they would not be afraid of offending every low lived Fellow among their Constituents.

To those who are wont to take Things upon Trust, Thought and Reflection are painful and laborious.

When Two Zealots of different Sects damn one another, neither of them abounds with Christian Charity.

A Man should prize as a Treasure inestimable, the Consolations arising from the Testimony of a good Conscience; which are not only able to support, but to solace and delight, amidst the vilest Detractions and the rankest Ingratitude.
