The trial of Robinson, for the murder of Ellen Jewett, commenced in New-York on Thursday, Judge Edwards presiding. Much time was occupied in empannelling a jury. It excited a good deal of interest; the circumstantial evidence against him was very strong. Mr. Hoxie, his late employer, was seated at his side during the trial, and seemed to take a deep interest in his fate. Four witnesses were examined on Thursday, including Rosanna Townsend, at whose house the murder was committed, and whose evidence was positive as to the identity of Robinson coming into the house on the night of the murder.
A partial alibi was proved, by the testimony of a grocer, who sold Robinson some cigars late on the evening of the murder.
On the trial it was also clearly proved that many other men were let into the house that night, and that they went out in the midst of the alarm of fire and murder. This circumstance threw a reasonable doubt over what might otherwise have been condemnatory evidence.
The summing up of counsel on both sides continued until past twelve, Tuesday night. The Court then charged the Jury, who retired for about fifteen minutes, and returned into Court with a verdict of ACQUITTAL. The announcement of which was hailed with loud and boisterous cheers by the people in and outside the Court. When the verdict was pronounced Robinson, for the first time during the trial, exhibited signs of emotion, and burst into tears.—In a few minutes afterwards Robinson left the Court leaning on the arm of Mr. Hoxie.
The trial lasted five days.
