Full Text
The fellow, in consequence of this, was whipped so unmercifully, that the Frenchman interceded for him; and the Fellow, when he was released, blessed him for his Humanity, and when he had recovered of his Wounds, took an Opportunity, privately in the Night to repair to his Quarters, where he did not fail to reproach his Commander for his cruel and tyrannical Treatment of his Soldiers, and proposed to desert to the Enemy, with 100 of his Comrades, if he would give him a Letter of Credit to the French Commander in the Nabob's Army.
The Frenchman readily fell into the Snare, gave the Fellow the Letter he desired, as well as another, in which he described the State of the Army, and added some particular verbal Instructions, which he did not care to trust on Paper; with all these the trusty Drummer immediately repaired to his General, and then disappeared. The General made what Use he thought proper of these Informations, and just as the Armies came in Sight of each other, caused a Gallows to be erected, and hanged up the Frenchman in full View of his Friends.
