The editor of the Newburyport Herald, or one "who 'wriggles' for him, seems to be in a wonderful pet about our publishing a letter from Mr. Buckner, the new Senator from Missouri, declaring his adhesion to the administration. He rails at our want of "common justice" as he terms it, in not publishing the other letter bearing Mr. Buckner's name, which is written to nobody knows who, and nobody knows to whom. There are strong marks of suspicion about the genuineness of the letter given in the Herald, but we have no objection to giving it publicity when the editor of the Herald regains his temper, and publishes the letter written to the editor of the Jeffersonian. We must confess the gentleman has evinced a world of condescension, in noticing a paper of such "characteristic smallness" as the Gazette, for our sheet is actually one inch less in breadth, than the Herald!
The same editor has got into another pucker, because we have incidentally remarked, that Messrs. Cushing and Marston were the federal candidates for Congress in Essex North District, and Mr. Ogilvie the Democratic Republican! This is not wonderful at all. We don't know one federalist in a thousand, who is willing to own that proud name. But this is "disingenuousness" says Mr. A. "just on the borders of lying." Well, we have sometimes known Mr. A. by mere chance, to get "just on the borders of" truth; but not often, unless he gets cheated into it by way of an ACROSTIC!!!
