Success continues to crown the efforts of the Porte against Paswan Oglou, though these have been hitherto partial, in the hope that the army assembled before Adrianople would be able to strike the last blow at that audacious rebel. Osman Pacha, commandant at Rutschuk, after having beaten the rebels before that town, advanced, the beginning of this month to Czitow (a town situate on the Danube and celebrated by the last treaty of peace between the imperial court and the Ottoman Porte). He attacked the remnant of the rebels with much vigor, drove them from that quarter after killing 150 men, and obliged them to retrace their steps toward Nicopolis, which they seized upon in their retreat. The Cadi of Czitow, as also three other rebels, convicted of holding communication with the rebels, were decapitated on the spot. At the same time, Hussein Pacha who was encamped with a corps of troops before Grabowa, attempted to surprise Tirnova, a very populous city of Bulgaria, which the rebels had also occupied.. This expedition succeeded the more briskly by means of a secret correspondence carried on with the Aga or primate of that quarter, whom Paswan Oglou had raised to that post. The rebels were not only driven from Tirnova, but they were obliged to retreat precipitately upon Widdin. Paswan Oglou has, it is said, collected his principal forces in the environs of that fortress, which he is causing to be put in the best state of defence. They relate, that the garrison which he left at Nicopolis, lately discovered a subterranean excavation in which they found a great number of tons of powder, in perfect order. Paswan Oglou has had it conducted to Widdin.
