An Eccentric Center.
The Center, prohibition organ, calls on all members of the third party to show their best loyalty in securing and enforcing prohibition under the new local option law, which it says "will hold out false hopes to the unthinking but good-hearted multitude, and will but tend to delay the day of honest state prohibition with a party back of the law—both constitutional and statutory—pledged to its enforcement." It "sincerely trusts" that every third party prohibitionist will give his best support to a measure which "will prove an unmitigated fraud and curse," "greatly increase the drunkard-making business in places where it is now unlimited," and hinder it only where there is "practically temperance." The Center seems to be perfectly sober and earnest, without a vestige of humor or irony in declaring that there is no "inconsistency" in these remarks on local prohibition. We have only its word for it. Otherwise the exhortations of a third party prohibitionist to "delay" state prohibition by supporting an "unmitigated fraud and curse" would at least be queer. A Center of that sort is certainly eccentric.—Evening Journal.
