CANADA LEE who made dramatic history in his portrayal of the stage production, "Native Son," was the first to be signed for John Steinbeck's "Lifeboat," which is in production at the 20th Century Fox studios. The 29-year-old actor is portraying Joe, Negro steward rescued from the torpedoed ship. The entire action of the picture takes place in a 26-foot lifeboat adrift on the ocean.
Lee Says He Wants To Better Race Pix Roles
HOLLYWOOD, Cal., - (SNS)- "I want to do things in pictures that will give Negroes a new status."
That, in his own words, is the prime ambition of Canada Lee, the sensational young Negro actor from Broadway who is making his screen debut in "Lifeboat," the suspenseful Alfred Hitchcock sea drama at 20th Century-Fox.
"I want to help to win better roles for the people of my race, and a better understanding of the people of my race," says Canada. "I want to do things to repair the wrong impressions that have grown up through the years - some of them fostered by some of my own people-"
