Captain Witty arrived from Oporto reporting that a vessel from Ireland brought news of Mons. Thurot landing 1500 French men on the Irish coast, most killed by locals, and his squadron destroyed by English frigates in the Irish Channel, comparing it unfavorably to M. Conflans's failed invasion.

Full Text

Saturday last Capt. Witty arrived here in 5 weeks from Oporto, and advises, that the day before he came from thence a vessel arrived there in 9 days from Ireland, the master of which informed, That Mons. Thurot had landed 1500 men upon some part of that coast, where most of them were soon after cut to pieces by the inhabitants; and that some English frigates cruising in the Irish Channel had fell in with his squadron, and had taken and destroyed the whole of them; so that (if this account be true) Mons. Thurot's enterprize has turned out with as little honour to the French nation as M. Conflans's late boasted invasion did.
