FRESNO, Sept. 26. (UP) - Two men were in critical condition today after a shooting and suicide attempt which Police Chief Frank P. Truax called the work of a madman.
Max Cherin, 40, co-proprietor of a clothing store here, was shot three times in the abdomen a few minutes after he left a synagogue where Jewish New Year was being celebrated last night.
Charles Garabedian, 48, who police named as the assailant, then turned the gun on himself. After regaining consciousness for a few minutes this morning, he was questioned by Police Lieutenant A. B. McCreary but could give no explanation for his act.
He said he did not know the victim.
Cherin and his wife, Mollie, had walked from the synagogue to their car which was parked in front of Garabedian's home. As Cherin was about to step into the car, Garabedian walked out on the porch and fired three times at him.
Garabedian then went back into the house, police said, ignited a pile of kerosene-soaked rags on the floor of the dining room and shot himself in the head with the .32 caliber automatic pistol he had used to shoot Cherin.
