Ohio Footballer Sings Like His Cousin Lanza
COLUMBUS, O., Jan. 25—Maybe it's because he's a cousin of Mario Lanza, noted tenor, but Earle Gentile, 24-year-old student in physio-therapy at Ohio State University is looking for an opportunity to make music his career.
Gentile who is better known among sports followers as a former member of Ohio State's football squad, has been encouraged in his present "hobby" of singing by Prof. Dale V. Gilliland, of Ohio State's School of Music. That was more than a year ago. Since then he has been taking voice lessons. His friends say he sings well enough to be Lanza's brother. At one time he copied Lanza's style, but lately, he has switched to the style of other Italian tenors, he says. And his choice is straight operatic singing.
Meanwhile, the Cleveland boy is pursuing a course in Ohio State University's Health Center that is preparing him among other things, for administering to those who have been crippled or injured through accidents. He is in his senior year in physio-therapy, supplementing his funds for completing his college education by working part-time in a state liquor store. And of course, devoting time to voice lessons.
"I don't know," Gentile said, "sure like to sing. Right now my music is like a hobby with me. But if I had the opportunity, I think I'd take it. The medicine gives me a good solid thing to fall back on."
He has more than a distant relationship with the famed Mario Lanza. Earle's mother is a cousin of the tenor's mother, and Earle has met Mario several times. By coincidence, his mother's maiden name was Caruso.
