Eight Nurses Graduate from the Lucy Webb Hayes School.
Deaconesses Received on Probation and Inducted Into Office at McKendree Church.
The class of '95 of the Lucy Webb Hayes National Training School had its commencement exercises last evening at McKendree M. E. Church, where an interesting programme was observed, and eight graduates were transferred from the classroom to the more practical duties and responsibilities of life.
The president of the faculty, Dr. Ames, presided and also delivered an introductory address. He referred to the past year as the most prosperous in the history of the school, and complimented the class of graduates upon the high average attained, which, he said, was 92 1/2 out of a possible 100.
The musical portion of the programme consisted of a soprano solo by Mrs. W. M. Wishart, contralto solo by Miss Mattie Gray and soprano solo by Miss Elizabeth Wahly, and two members of the class read an admirable paper each, the first by Miss Kirstine Petersen, with "The spirit of service" as a theme, and the other, by Miss M. Maud Mowbray, upon "The largeness of life."
Rev. L. B. Wilson, D. D., delivered the address to the graduates. Dr. Ames conferred the diplomas, with appropriate remarks, and Rev. H. S. France delivered a brief address.
A feature of the evening was the singing of the class song, "The Master's Call," which was the production of Miss Louise E. Dew, one of the graduates. Miss Dashiell presided at the organ throughout the exercises.
The graduates were: Misses Minnie Benton, of Kent Island, Md.; Louise E. Dew, Lansing, Mich.; Elizabeth Humphrey, Indianapolis, Ind.; M. Maud Mowbray, Newport, Del.; Kirstine Petersen, Frederica, Denmark; Addie Quade, Grand Ledge, Mich.; Ada Randall, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Annie C. Rodriguez, New York.
Deaconesses received on probation: Misses Leona C. Bartolet, Cartes R. Swartz, Minnie Benton, Mary E. Spence, M. Emma Robbins, Alice M. Wells, Dora E. Sandy and Lura J. Will. The deaconesses inducted into office were: Misses Elizabeth Humphrey, Kirstine Petersen and Ada Randall.
The Lucy Webb Hayes Training School is designed to fit its students to go abroad, into hospitals and elsewhere, as teachers, workers and helpers in the cause of religion and humanity.
