From an examination under oath George J. Gould before Special Master Arthur Berry of the United States circuit court for New York an authentic statement of facts is obtained as to the debts which his sister Anna paid as the wife of Count Boni Castellane.
These facts are astounding. During the first four years of her marriage with Castellane she became responsible for his debts to the extent of six million dollars.
A sensible West Virginia girl would not give a fraction of that amount for the entire French nobility. Besides the true way to look at such matters is a man who owes these enormous amounts except by reason of some sheer misfortune is not worth having anyhow. There never was stock sold in a wild western mining scheme at a greater amount above its true value than is paid by rich young American women for titled foreign husbands.
