Full Text

SHAM ROBBERY.—The pitiful story of the robbery of a Mr. Avery, who stated that he was robbed of thirty-five hundred dollars, in the neighborhood of Hartford, Connecticut, turns out to be "all talk and no cider." The rascal was not robbed, as has since been ascertained, to the satisfaction of the police of Hartford. This tale turns out as we expected, and when we first heard of it, we said to aunt Hannah—we'll bet a guinea the whole turns out to be "all in my eye and Elizabeth Martin." As we said this, the specs fell from aunt Hannah's nose, and she exclaimed, Oh! you uncharitable wretch, Oh you prince of incredulity! —But after all, the fellow has not been robbed, and we are glad of it, and so is aunt Hannah! Shakspeare says, according to Othello the Moor,—the curly headed rascal—"Who steals my purse, steals trash."—But suppose the purse is not stolen—what does the thief steal in that case? That's a Newtonian question, said aunt Hannah.
