Campy Gets 'Most Courageous' Award
Everglades Hotel, Miami, Fla.—"I am most grateful to the Orange Blossom Classic Committee for selecting me to receive the first 'Most Courageous Athletic Award,'" said Roy Campanella.
The former Brooklyn Dodger star catcher was interviewed via long distance telephone by Charles J. Smith III, director of public relations, Florida A&M University. The interview was made during a press luncheon for the Miami area media held on the Roof of the beautiful Everglades Hotel overlooking the Biscayne Bay and Miami Beach.
Campy received the award and an honorary membership in the Rattlers' Varsity "F" Club during the halftime intermission of the 27th annual Orange Blossom Classic here Saturday night, December 5. The grid classic pitted Prairie View A&M College Panthers and the Rattlers.
Such international famous sports figures as Willie Galimore, Chicago Bears halfback, Willie Lee, Chicago Bears tackle, Althea Gibson, famed tennis grand slam winner, tackle Willie McClung of the Cleveland Browns, and light heavyweight boxing champion Archie Moore, all are members of the Rattlers' varsity "F" Club.
Coach Jake Gaither told the gentlemen of the press that he has a bunch of long and lean boys who are hungry and want to play football.
