400,000 Cars Enter Arizona During 1939

PHOENIX. Jan. 26-(UP)-Indications that Arizona rapidly is becoming one of the tourist attractions of the nation were found today in a report of the State Highway department which showed almost 400,000 automobiles entered the state during 1939.

B. H. McAhren. superintendent of the division, said the 390,583 incoming automobiles. the highest number ever recorded. represented an increase of 31,145 over the number of cars checked in during 1938 at various border stations.

The great influx of tourists brought about a sharp rise on revenue from the state's five cent a gallon gasoline tax. McAhren said. Gas tax revenues in 1939 totaled $4.421.064. a rise of almost $200.000 over 1938 collections.

McAhren said most of the increased revenue came from tourist's dollars. His figures showed while the number of tourists' cars jumped by 31,145 last year, only 8,000 more machines were registered in Arizona.

"These figures clearly indicate," he said, "That most of the increase in revenue came from tourists. I believe the people of Arizona are awakening to the importance of this great industry."
