SINGULAR MISTAKE.-Judge Claggett, in his worthy paper, the Keokuk Constitution gives us a little tilt up this way. He holds up our city council to scorn because it gives aliens, who went in for exemption papers, to understand that they can't be employed by the city; and then calls that body the "Republican Council of Davenport." Not so fast Judge. You mistake the mark badly. The council of this city has a good working majority of democrats. They are all good sound straight men too-never scratch a ticket and vote vigorously. It was our Irish democrat who offered the resolution. It was seconded by a German, and voted for by all. They meant it too, and will live up to it. Nothing makes a true Irishman more enraged than to see one of his country taking a huge oath that he claims the protection of Great Britain. He resents it at once as a personal insult. Nothing touches a true son of the Fatherland in a more tender spot than to see a brother clinging to the royal purple of some poor German despot from whom he has departed in disgust. That is where the matter lies. For the good name of our city just make the correction, Judge.
