DIFFICULT PROBLEM

EASILY SETTLED.

That the phrase "necessity is the mother of invention" knows no geographical bounds recently was demonstrated in New South Wales, Australia, by a landowner who subsequently ascertained that his ready application of the power in his Mitchell six-cylinder car, brought to the island continent from far-off Racine, Wis., had been the subject of editorial comment in numerous papers in Sydney, Melbourne and other Australian cities.

The six was used hard on that farm. A substantial stone barn was built, and by means of a trailer the automobile hauled many tons of material from the railway station to the ground. But someone failed to take into consideration the installation of a 400-gallon steel tank until the big barn was almost completed. How to get the tank in place without a winch or suitable block and tackle became a problem.

"Autos make good stationary engines, run sawmills, cut feed and do a lot of hard work in the United States," said the Australian farmer.

Why not use the Mitchell to hoist the tank?

Two poles, with a crossbar at the top, a pulley and a strong rope, all easily procurable at the farm, were brought into use, and the automobile hoisted the tank to its place on the roof.
