NO HOPE BUT IN A BETTER ELEMENT.

The return of Brownell and Porter seems inevitable from Clackamas county. The press of both parties down there is muzzled and the opposition seems incapable of getting their record before the people.

The better elements of the Republican party stand paralyzed in that county in the presence of frothy demagogues who are ready to advocate any measure or pass any bill that is water on their mill.

The opposition in that county has long since ceased to be any opposition when it fell under the malign influence of U'Ren who has been hand in glove with the corporation and boodle Republicans.

The opposition had votes enough in the last legislature to have put up an effective fight against nearly every bad measure,

But beyond getting their solid vote for himself for senator their leader, Windy Bill Smith of Baker county seemed to have no interest in the state affairs.

The Democrats and Populists scattered like sheep without a shepherd among the wolves of the Republican senatorial factions. The State today has no hope of reforms but from the decent Republicans.

If half way decent Republicans and the few decent ones left in that party will assert themselves and sweep Brownellism and all reckless sans-culotte politicians by the board there is some hope of lower taxes.

Brownell with decent influences around him will do no harm. In the Senate when Simon, Selling, Bates, Hazeltine and that stripe of business men predominated, both Brownell and Fulton made good records.

But the decent Republicans of Clackamas are like their newspapers, muzzled and bound hand and foot in the thraldom of veneered mobism-the ignorant and mercenary seem to be in the majority and Clackamas will pay yet higher taxes.

With about half the valuation of Marion that county cost $69,000 for current expenses the past year leaving out roads and highways, and Marion cost $41,000 for the same purpose. The press of that county does nothing but gloss over these facts. "And worse remains behind" to a character in Shakespeare.
