France and which, when carried to the perfection it is capable of, will render her, in the article of trade, independent of all nations.

Great as this trade will one day be, her own inhabitants will increase in proportion to it: and then she will appear in all her glory.

What a grand idea of the future wealth and greatness of Britain does the possession of Canada force upon us.

With great reason then your excellency calls this conquest an era ever memorable; from which we may date the firm establishment of the British empire in North America. We could almost wish that Providence had reserved us for those glorious times.

The immediate consequences that result to ourselves from this conquest we now feel. Our frontiers, heretofore drenched in blood, and made the shocking scene of massacre and plunder, now enjoy a perfect tranquility. But this tranquility, if his majesty's arms had not succeeded in the last campaign, would have been of precarious continuance; even though we had remained in the undisturbed possession of Lower Canada: for nothing less than the complete reduction, the entire possession of that whole country can secure us against the evils we have so long experienced. So long as the French could have held any part of that country, their influence over the Indians would have continued: and under that influence, those sons of violence would again be actors in the old tragedy.

May this horrid tragedy never be acted anew! May the possession of Canada ever remain with Great Britain! May the security of our country be settled upon the most sure and lasting foundations. This we promise ourselves from the wisdom and vigor of his majesty's councils, which have brought the North American war to so glorious a conclusion.

This event gives us the greater joy as we have contributed so largely to effect it: But our great exertions, though we have partaken of his majesty's bounty, we are now labouring under the distress of. The past experience of his goodness makes us hope for the continuance of it: And we assure ourselves, your excellency's representations to his majesty's ministers in favour of this exhausted, and most loyal province, will not be wanting.
