BIG FIRE.—The extensive abattoir of the Central Stock and Transit Company, Jersey City, was totally destroyed by fire Saturday evening, the total loss reaching almost $1,000,000. Built on piles, the structure of two stories was entirely of wood, but the machinery for the various purposes of the company was costly and expensive, which the amount of stock, including dressed beef, mutton, and upward of 5000 live sheep and lambs, went to swell the loss. The 18 men at work in the building escaped. The cattle boat Burlington was destroyed, and several barges and coal cars damaged. Over 700 men are thrown out of employment by the fire.
