Walter Newcomb Detained For
Murder of Wallace Faust.

Affair Took Place On Wisconsin River
Last September.—Hearing Held
Next Week.

Walter Newcomb, a citizen of the village of Boydtown in Crawford county, was brought to Lancaster by under sheriff W. B. Dyer, and arraigned before Justice Burrows. Thursday on a charge of murder. Newcomb was confined to the county jail without bail pending his preliminary hearing which takes place November 16.

Newcomb as stated lives in Crawford county in the village of Boydtown, which is located opposite the village of Woodman in Grant county. He had in his employ shortly before September 26, a man named Wallace Faust. On that day Faust, with some other men, were drinking on the Grant county side of the river, and toward evening called Newcomb over to join them. Newcomb says that he went over and remained a short time Faust becoming quarrelsome and that an altercation took place between Faust and one of the other men while he was there. After staying a little while he started back across the Wisconsin river, Faust and another man accompanying him in the boat. On the way back another quarrel arose and, according to Newcomb, Faust attacked him, threatening to throw him into the stream. Faust was struck on the head with the oar during the struggle and Newcomb thrown into the water, being nearly drowned. After landing at Boydtown, Newcomb went to his home and Faust to his father's house in the same village. It is said that Faust bore a scalp wound from the fracas, and that he paid no attention toward the care of it. Complications set in it is said and he died several weeks later.
